Tsunami Is Pau
Well we made it. The Tsunami that was created because of the 8.8 Earthquake in Chile came and went without incident. Hawai’i was lucky. I wish the people in Chile could say the same. My thoughts and aloha go out to them. In my post Tsunami Update I showed pictures from this morning before the Tsunami. I didn’t allow comments as I just wanted to keep a little history of what transpired. Well then the Tsunami Warning Center said that there was about one hour to go before they would lift the Tsunami Warning for Hawai’i I decided to walk down to Kuliouou Park to see what was going on. I didn’t want to drive as I was afraid with Kalanianiole Highway closed I might get a ticket. On the walk down Lisa called and said she was getting pizza and do I want some. I said sure and asked her to come to the park.
I’m telling you it was a sight to behold. And my darlin’ earlier today asked me to take pictures so I did.

In addition I took two small videos:
When the surge was flowing out the fish that remained in the shallow water were all over the place. You wouldn’t believe how fast the water moved. The Tsunami was something I’ve never seen in my life and now I can say I have. It was one of the most awesome things I have ever seen. I heard on KITV that Hawai’i dodged a bullet. Boy that is so true.
Again thank you all for your wonderful comments earlier this morning. I really appreciated it and I hope you enjoy the pictures and video.
On another note, you might notice that my side bar is messed up. I’m working on getting everything back. I don’t know what happened but the information will return
Hey, it’s only my opinion.

Great pictures and videos too. I am really glad that Hawaii dodged a bullet and all of you are safe. I have been thinking of you all throughout the day. I was on facebook and friend said Hawaii was all clear so I wanted to check your blog.
Well thank you very much my friend. It was quiet a day my friend. I’m glad it wasn’t near as big as they said it was
So happy you’re ok!
Mahalo my friend
Great pictures! So glad you got such pictures and the movie! Most of all I’m glad you are all safe. Thanks again for keeping us all informed. Hope the rest of your weekend is terrific!! Enjoy!
Sylvia
Thank you so much my friend. I’m just glad it’s all over with and all is status quo. Thank you for your wonderful comment
Have a great day
Glad the waves weren’t that high. Just 2.8 feet in Hilo and .6 foot at Barber’s Pt. What a relief!
Weren’t you told to evacuate this morning? I thought you lived near the ocean.
Yup we were lucky. I live outside the evacuation area. Not by much but enough that we didn’t have to. I’m glad we didn’t have to go
so glad you are safe. As Dear and I traveled up the coast of California we saw some really wild surf…I was without internet and tv so heard on the radio on our roadtrip about the earthquake. I’ve got internet at the hotel so I’m catching up :0)
Yes that crappy surf was all over I guess. I’m just glad the Tsunami fizzled out. We got lucky
I am thankful that you are OK and that it was not as bad as predicted. Great photos!
Mahalo my friend. So was everyone over here
I just heard of the whole earthquake and tsunami. So glad you are all okay in Hawaii and praying the people of Japan fare as well.
Thank you my friend. I hope they will be as well. If it gets to them at the rate it went through Hawai’i they shouldn’t have any problems
So glad to hear all is well with you and that the stuff movies are made of didn’t happen.
Loved the videos!
Isn’t that the truth. But the State handled it very well I think. Glad you enjoyed my friend. Have a great Sunday
Wow! What a day you had. I know I’m out of it but I just heard that you guys dodged a big bullet. I am so thankful that the Tsunami didn’t cause any harm. I can’t even imagine if it did especially to you or your loved ones.
You did a great job of documenting it. Now you can take a deep breath and relax.
I know that’s easy said then done because I have a strange feeling in my stomach and a lump in my throat just thinking about what could have happened.
Take care my friend!
Living in Hawai’i does have it’s perks but on the other hand it has it’s lows as well Yesterday being a prime example. Thanks for your concern my friend. All is well.
You see thanks to my cats who crossed their paws for you, the Tsunami was a mini one and I am happy that you hadn’t 5 m high waves !
I found the videos and pictures very interesting I am sure you are the first person to have a “Tsunami” Pizza ! I was very intrigued by the drink of your friend Lisa it’s something Japonese ??
I’m deeply indebted to you and all your cats for keeping fingers and paws crossed. I’m just glad it wasn’t worse than it was. She was drinking green tea my friend
Glad you are safe, Thom. For some reason the system didn’t let me leave a comment here. I was glued to the internet watching the Chilean cnn…
Thank you my friend. If you are talking about my post where I was updating it, I closed the comments on that post. I just wanted to update everyone.
Oh, thank God you’re ok, Thom. Our internet went off yesterday, (the whole night too and early this morning) about the same time CNN run the breaking news about Chile. When they started reporting about tsunamis, especially when I began hearing Hawaii…grrr…I couldn’t do anything but sit and wait.
Nice pics. I like looking at the surge coming and leaving.
Doesn’t that kind of crap happen always at just the wrong time? It so pisses me off when that happens. I wish you could have seen it in person. I’ve never seen any water move so fast. The tide would go out and then just come back in so fast. By that I mean when it started going down it went at the speed of light….then when the next surge came again at the speed of light it would fill back up. It was truly amazing
That water is really moving – glad Hawaii escaped the big one!
You and me both. You should have seen how fast it moves… Just awesome
My dearest Thom,
I am just very grateful that you and everyone else
is ok.
I was worried about you,
you are kind of the only friend I do know in Hawaii.
Stay blessed.
hugs
shakira
Thank you my friend for your wonderful words. it was an experience alright. One I hope I never have to go through again
Thom, I’m so grateful that you and the islands were unaffected.
Now you’ll have to listen to the Monday Morning quarterbacks scream, “why did we spend all that money we don’t have on evacuation?”… and the rest of that rot. Perhaps people have learned from Katrina that when the gov’t says MOVE, it’s a good idea to listen!
You and me both my friend. I hope you are wrong about the Monday Morning quaterbacking but I doubt it.The state did a wonderful job and I so much rather be safe than sorry. Can you imagine what would have been said if how Katrina was handled was done here even with the outcome of the Tsunami? You just can’t please people
Really glad that you were unaffected.Cool that you took the videos.
Thank you my friend. I’m glad of the outcome as well
So glad everything went well! Great pics and video!
Mahalo my friend. I’m glad you enjoyed
Because I’m insane, I’m always a little disappointed when a disaster where I am doesn’t quite pan out. But I’m delighted it stayed mellow where you are. What’s the green stuff on your lunch pizza? One of those “vegetables” I’ve heard tell of?
I’m just like you. I wanted to see more really deep down. I’m glad for the results. Yes it was spinach…go figure LOL Lisa ordered them LOL
Thank God — I am so glad it wasn’t as big as expected and everything is ok.
Mahalo Barbara. It was a great outcome to a situation that could have been devastating. We were lucky
I was watching it on CNN for hours. I’m glad to hear there was no threat afterall…well, guess there was the threat but nothing came of it!! As I said on my blog this morning, I sure hope that if there is a next time, the people of Hawai’i pay heed to the warnings…if you know what I mean.
Glad you’re all okay tho. You were in my thoughts.
I do hope that they pay attention next time as well. People can tend to get fickle about things like this. Mahalo my friend. Very much appreciated
I never left the TV all day yesterday, but I’m glad all on Hawaii are safe. I kept looking for you Thom when they showed people up in the hills or on the 3rd floor of hotels. I swam in that water on Waikiki so I felt like I knew the area. Of course glad you’re safe, Thom and thank you for reporting so faithfully during the day! All’s well that end’s well!
Mahalo my dear sweet friend for this comment. You kept commenting yesterday and it made me feel good. When I first heard of that traffic up at Tantalus I thought nope, I’m not going. Isn’t it amazing when you’ve been there how much closer to home it feels? What a day. Something I don’t want to have to experience again anytime soon I must say
I was thinking about you Thom. Our eyes were glued to the TV. Oh boy, were you brave to go out and capture the incident in video! Glad you and your love ones are safe.
I do not know if our heavy rains yesterday was the effect of the tsunami, but some coastal beaches were closed. Later that night, it was lifted.
Do we have our emergency kit prepared?
Take care Thom!
Yup, we do have an emergency kit. Several as a matter of fact and always have plenty of food and water as well. I heard that the Tsunami had an affect on the West Coast so that was most likely it. Funny, today we get rain as well. Yesterday as clear as a bell. I only went there when the news was saying that it was much smaller and in about an hour they were going to cancel the warning. I’m glad I did. My mom wasn’t happy that I went there either. Mothers…pfft…just kidding
Lucky!! I’m glad everything is ok
Indeed my friend and thank you for your concern. Much appreciated
WHEW! What a morning/day it was. and yes, thank goodness it was nothing serious. It was quite scary just to “wait and see.”
You are so right. A day filled with a lot of different emotions. Trying to stay calm for everyone around and yet wondering if disaster is going to hit and fear. I’m just glad of the outcome as well. We were lucky my friend
I’m happy to hear that Hawaii wasn’t as badly affected by the Tsunami as was feared Thom. You got some amazing pics and video footage.
Thank you my friend. I appreciate it a great deal. We were all lucky
i’m glad the danger is over. that tsunami pizza must have been a meal to remember
fascinating photos and vids
Indeed it was a meal to remember. Hence the photo LOL Thank you for your kind words my friend
You know what I kept wondering about Thom? And maybe I’m just realllllllllly stupid… I dunno… but anyway… I’m bettin’ you can probably explain this! We always hear about the HUUUUGE waves in the Pacific – off California – and in Hawaii — you know the 10 foot waves that call alllllllllll the surfers out for the day! But then when they were talking about the coming Tsunami – and they were expecting somewhere between 3 and 8 foot waves… what makes a THREE FOOT tsunami wave WORSE than a regular day 10 foot wave? I know I have seen 6 or 8 or 10 foot waves on the Atlantic side too … so I’m really CONFUSED by this! Hep me Thom! Hep me dis!
You mean my darlin’ you don’t know? Well we are in very good company until yesterday when I learned after having been up all night long and having my TV on. In a nut shell the difference is this. A regular wave, that surfers surf on and that we see every day is just on the surface. It is affected by the movement of the moon basically. A Tsunami, which I also learned yesterday comes from the Japanese and means Harbor Wave, is caused by an underground disturbance, like an earthquake, and it moves the entire depth of the ocean. It gets stronger in shallower water. Moving all that water makes it very forceful and that is why there can be such destruction. So you don’t see a wave like you normally do. The first wave is usually not the strongest or biggest one either. Ours ended up being right around 20 minutes apart. They also travel at about 400 to 500 miles per hour. I hope that helps as this is what I understand. xoxoxo
WOW! Thanks! I had no idea that regular waves were just “surface” waves… but I guess that makes sense. But man! 400-500 mph??? That’s CRAZY! Amazing! God really thought of some crazy stuff! What an imagination!
Isn’t that the truth
Amazing!
Glad you’re ok, Thom!
Mahalo my friend. It was quiet a day
So good to hear that all is well!
Mahalo and thank you for the comment my friend
We are home safe and sound. I am glad all is well there, too. We just watched your videos. I can’t believe how quickly the water was moving!
I’m so glad you are home safe and sound Q. I wish you could have seen it. It was truly amazing and I’m glad I got to see it once in my life. But now that I have, enough is enough
I totally agree. No instant replays on this one.
Hmmm… I came back to see what you’d said to my comment, but where’s my comment?? And now I don’t even remember what I said, except for lovin’ those photos, and lovin’ more that you’re safe and the house is standing, and the toilet’s flushing, and the roads are dry, etc. etc.
Hope your blog ‘issues’ are sorted soon too. So quiet without your six posts a day!!
:-X
What you talkin’ bout Willis? LOL. This is the only comment you have made here. I only have 4 in spam from 3 days ago and nothing showed up. You hittin’ the bottle again? LOL. You think your glad? pffft me too. Especially with the shitter working. Could you imagine? LOL Mahalo sister.
6 posts daily…bite me!!!
Yeah, I’m hitting the bottle again — the Nyquil bottle, and man that’s good stuff! On Saturday when someone said that the authorities told everyone to STOP using water because the sewer system might be compromised in high water, I thought OMG…! I don’t think 800,000 people can all hold it for a few days…
Hurray for close calls!
Well I hope you feel better soon. You know there’s always a bucket out in the yard we could use…pffft
The speed of the surge is amazing to see. Thank you esp. for the videos. I’m so glad that it was that small… I shudder to imagine the destruction of a much larger surge.
Isn’t that the truth. Remember Indonesia? That was horrible. I was shocked at the speed they move as well. We were real lucky
Dear Thom, I’m so glad that all of you are safe and sound. I just found out about the news in Hawai’i today. Tsunami and earthquake always give me goosebumps. There have been horrifying moments here in Indonesia, and it is something I never wish for anyone in this world. Still, I agree to you that it really is a sight of behold. Your photo shots and videos are amazing. Take good care. xoxoxo
My dear sweet friend. I thought about you a lot yesterday knowing that one that hit over there. How horrible. I so remember it and they kept showing videos of it. Something else. As I said I was glad I got to see it and that it was very very small. It’s something I never ever want to go through again. Take care my friend. xoxoxo
Dear Thom, I’m very glad that it was a very small Tsunami. I went to your blog as soon as I found out about the news. Hopefully everything will stay safe and sound. xoxoxo
Thank you my friend. Yes let’s hope it stays safe.
I’m so glad you guys are safe!
What a nightmare.
And yumyum for the Pizza
It was good and thank you my friend
Things are just getting pretty crazy in the world lately. So glad you all are ok.
Mahalo. Crazy indeed. It’s sorta scary.
My Dad who used to live in Hilo said that it was those flopping fish that got so many people swept out to sea during that disaster they had years ago. The people ran to grab the fish and didn’t see the next wave coming in.
That makes total sense to me. It moves so fast it’s unbelievable.
I was overjoyed it passed you by and it’s good to know how well prepared you all were.
