There Is A Tsunami Coming To Hawai’i

written by Thom - February 27th, 2010 at 12:27 am

It’s 12:15 am on the 27th of February. There was an 8.8 earthquake off the coast of Chile. My thoughts and aloha are with all the people that the earthquake has affected in Chile and elsewhere. It has generated a Tsunami. They are reporting the wave is 4 feet now. And there is just not one wave with a Tsunami. There are multiple waves. Hawai’i is under a Tsunami Advisory right now and they say if it is to hit it will be today, now, at around 11:19 am. They are also saying it travels about the speed of a jet airplane and last anywhere from 6 to 10 hours. The news also just said that they will be back with an update after the Tsunami hits the first buoy around 12:30 am.

You can follow this tsunami at NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center or at KITV.com.

Let us all hope for the best.

UPDATE: Now they are reporting they will have more information at 1 am

UPDATE 2: Hawai’i is under a Tsunami Warning (Indicates that a tsunami is imminent and that coastal locations in the warned area should prepare for flooding). They don’t know the size right at this point. It’s 1 am.

Hey, it’s only my opinion.

  1. I heard about this just now on the news. I’ll be praying for everyone and hoping that the consequences will be minor. x

  2. Oh dang…this is so scary!!! I’ll be watching the news now, thinking of your safety.

  3. One of the benefits, I guess, of being in the middle of the ocean is that y’all get some warning with these, as fast as they travel. Stay safe. I’ll be thinking of you while I’m on the road to TN today. Mwah! xxoo

  4. Good gravy, man. Be safe.

  5. Are you very close to the coast?

  6. You better stay safe, Thom.
You all will be in my prayers.
    hugs
    shakira

  7. thom, just heard about the tsunami. Glad you’re out of the risk area. Stay away from the coast for now! They are talking about the quake and the tsunami on msnbc. Stay safe!

  8. Had a feeling you were at your computer and would answer my comment quickly… Don’t even go down to the coast to see what’s happening. The water can sneak up on you…

    • That’s so true. The sirens are going off at 6 hear to start alerting everyone that something is going on and to turn on the tv and radio. Going with my friend to her mom’s house now to get sandbags. She’s in an evacuation zone and we are going to put the sand bags at her gate and then she’s coming here :) Thanks again Mary

  9. Thom;

I just woke up and heard about the earthquake in Chile. A 8.8 earthquake is just so hard to comprehend. Mahalo my friend, I’ll be glued to the news reports and my laptop fo sure, keeping an eye on your beautiful Island Of Hawaii!

  10. Be safe, my friend. I will be praying for you and the rest of Hawaii. I’ve been monitoring the news and it has been reported that Hawaii will sound off its tsunami sirens at 6 a.m.

This is quite scary because the entire Pacific region – to as far as Japan and the Philippines- have received the tsunami alert.

Let’s all hope and pray for the best.

    • Indeed they have been alerted. When it comes to Hawai’i it will hit the Big Island first and be 12 feet they are expecting and then decrease to 9 on the other side of the island. Haven’t heard about Oahu. Thanks for your warm thoughts :)

  11. Thom… can you get PICTURES? That’s the IMPORTANT thing! (just kidding!) You guys are all in my prayers. Be careful…

    • LOL..I so hope I can. But I don’t want to venture near there at all. I can’t run faster than the speed of a jetliner LOL :) Thank you my friend :)

  12. I just heard about this this morning Thom. I pray it loses steam before it gets to you. Stay safe!

  13. I’ve just heard it in the news… and of course you know who I thought of first of all> YOU!!!!

    Take care
Stay at home and up on the highest mountain… No beach today
    Not joking today

    Hugs my friend!
    ;)

    • Many mahalos my friend. Yeah, not beach today. It’s funny, me and my friend Lisa went last night to Sandy Beach for a little picnic. Coincidental :) Thank you :0

  14. Okay Thom, they said here that you’re expecting the tsunami around 11 o’clock AM. I will keep you in my thoughts and come back in a while to see how you’re doing…

    • Thank you so much. It’s suppose to hit at 11:19 4 hours and counting. I have the bath tubs filled with water, pots filled with water, gas for the generator. We should be good to go.

  15. I just heard the news about the earthquake and heard about what could happen in the aftermath. I pray for all involved and you my friend by name. For I know that you know many that could be affected.

  16. OMG!!! I’m not back online yet (still can’t see well) but I had to stop in and send you hugs… PLEASE BE SAFE!!!!!

Hope you come through unscathed – will keep everything crossed for you and those you love. **HUGS**

    • You perfect jewel you. Thank you for coming on line being blind as a bat LOL. No serious. Thank you. I appreciate it. We are as prepared as we can be. Thank you so much :)

  17. Shouldn’t you evacuate or seek higher ground or something?! Get out of there!

    Be safe.

    • We aren’t in an evacuation zone. So they are telling everyone to stay put if you not in that area. The don’t know how big or how long or what really is going to happen. Thank you for your concern.

  18. You and Quilly stay safe. I will keep you in my prayers for your safety as well as the islands.

    • Thank you my friend. But Quilly doesn’t live here any longer. She’s in Friday Harbor so she’s safe and she’s flying back from the East coast today to home :) Thank you :)

  19. I haven’t heard it yet, it’s now 6 pm here but we haven’t been watching TV ! I hope that it will not hit Hawai !! Be careful ! I cross my fingers and my cats their paws that nothing happens to you !! Will check on you tomorrow !

    • Thank you my friend. I appreciate that. I appreciate that Arthur and Rosie will be keeping their paws crossed. It’s going to hit us, that’s for sure. Thank you.

  20. Oh Thom, I heard it on the news and I came here as soon as I got online. I’m praying for you, your family and all the people there. I hope and pray it won’t happen.

    Take care my friend.

  21. I immediately thought of you and our friends in Kauia…stay safe, our thoughts are with you!

And make sure you keep checking in so we’ll know all’s well. Yea, I’m nagging. And your point is? ;)

  22. Thom, thanks for all your info. News media here have it approximately right but one thing they have said is that people should go to high ground and that will be best. They keep showing Ewa Beach (I’m assuming it’s in Hilo.) Please stay safe; there are so many of us who care about you…

    • Ewa Beach is on the west end of Oahu. It’s right on the beach and there are thousands of people living out there. All the growth for Honolulu has gone out west and it’s an area that has grown tremendously in the last 10 years :)

  23. I see Ewa Beach is on Oahu right near you I’m assuming. they are also letting us hear the warning tsunami sirens going off…

    • I’m glad you are getting to hear the sirens. It’s so odd to hear them going off. I’m on the East end out by Hanauma Bay. Ewa Beach is on the west end far far away from me :)

  24. Thom, take care of yourself and Myrna. Stay safe. I love you!

  25. OMG!! No surfing for you today!!

Just kidding! Stay safe my friend! I will definitely say a prayer for you and yours!

  26. we are worried for you. i am glad you are a mile away. please be careful. it is great that you’ve gone to so much preparation.

  27. We are wrapping our arms around you! Please do keep us posted as we are watching minute-by-minute and praying for your safety. Love!

  28. Keeping you and everyone in the tsunami’s path close in my heart.

    Stay safe my friend.

  29. I’m so sorry that my first visit to your fabulous blog is to comment on the news of the tsunami and earthquake, but I found your link through Harriet’s 1000 comments and had wanted to stop by and say hello before March started. I hope that with all the preparations you are reporting on, that the damage is minimal and everyone is safe!

    • Thank you for stopping by. I appreciate it. Mahalo for your wonderful comment. Yeah this was totally not planned believe me. I’m hoping to keep the post above updated :)

  30. GEEEZZZ!!!!!

Come here and hide. We can watch the people in NYC on webcams dealing with their snow.

Tsunami’s and Hurricanes make me happy to live in the Midwest.

    • Yeah but you get Tornadoes Dorothy. LOL. I wish I could come and hide. I should have thought about earlier. I wont be doing Sunday Stealing this week and damn it you picked it out.

  31. Thom, if you stay up above Hanauma Bay, you’ll be safe I’m sure. I swam at Hanauma Bay when we were in Oahu years ago. It’s so beautiful and sooo high up!

    • It is very beautiful up there. We can’t get there now as they have closed the main highway leading there. If anything we will go up to the upper part of Kuliouou Valley. :) Thanks for your concern.

  32. Good heavens, Thom, I just woke up to the news. A thousand hugs for your tsunami updates above, knowing that you must be *a bit* busy? I’ll be glued to the news anyhow for the next few hours and all my thoughts are with you.
    xox

  33. Thom, I’ve had some computer problems today and while I had heard about the earthquake in Chile, I hadn’t heard about the tsunami threat to Hawaii!! It sounds like you’ve done all you can do. Please know that I’m holding good thoughts for you all, just wish there was something I could do to help, too. You’ll be in my thoughts today for sure. Much love to you, Sylvia

  34. Thom I just heard the news about the Tsunami on it’s way to Hawaii. Your the first person I thought of. I am so glad to hear your prepared. You all will remain in my thoughts and prayers and I hope it’s not that bad. I just read this morning that Santiago had a 7 on the richter scale for an earthquake. Stay safe!!

    • The Earthquake was 8.8 I thought. Thank you so much for your thoughts and concerns. I really appreciate it. :) I’m glad I’m as prepared as I can be. :)

  35. Everybody’s waiting for the the tsunami at Wakiki. That’s what MSNBC is showing. There are some people in the water as far as I can see… I can see Diamond Head. There has been a “dramatic discoloration” in Hilo. It all looks very calm at the moment, Thom.

  36. You were the first person I thought of when I heard this news. Stay safe! Sending prayers. Please keep up informed.

  37. Thom, I had been away from media all day long, but I just picked my son up at the gym (he’d been watching CNN while working out) and he told me what’s been happening.
We turned on the TV as soon as we walked into the house and now we are waiting to see how it goes for you.

    Stay Safe! (Drinking water included!!)

  38. I’ve been watching KITV through CNN online… Hawaii has been sooooooooo BLESSED! And I am THANKING God! Better safe than sorry – and I am glad it has turned out just the way it has! I know they say an hour before they call off the warning — but I do think this whole thing has gone just RIGHT for Hawaii. I did hear them say something about Ventura, CA … but I’ve been searching and haven’t been able to come up with anything about them… I hope all is well there!

    • It’s canceled. And yes Hawai’i got lucky thank goodness. I haven’t heard about Ventura. I’ll look later. As you wanted I just got back from the park taking pictures. :)

  39. i’m away for the day and you have drama there!
i’m glad you escaped any serious consequences of the earthquake and the resulting tsunami.
    stay safe!

  40. I am worried about you, my friend. Please stay safe. I’ll have a good thought about the outcome…

  41. Thom, they just announced here that the tsunami is officially over and people can go back to lower ground and home. Thank goodness!! Glad you’re safe and sound Thom! :)

  42. Phew, thank all Tiki gods Hawaii dodged the bullet. I was just about to email you and thought I would check here first. Been stuck in traffic and listening to reports and thought of you, glad you’re OK. Double phew, I can still visit there someday, lol :)

  43. thom, i thought all your comments and pictures and videos were like a national geographic special… so great! i felt like i was there… thanx so much for the great information… i was so worried about u today and i am soooooo glad all is well…….such a great piece of work this is.. i am very proud of you….

    • Thanks ma. I’m just glad it’s all over with as well. I’m glad it wasn’t as bad as the said it was going to be but better to be save than sorry :) The state operated very well today :)

  44. Oh my goodness! I just finished reading your Tsunami updates and I’m so glad that everything turned out so well. I hope there will be no further Tsunami or earthquake warnings. All of you are in my prayers and thoughts. Take good care, my dear friend. xoxoxo

    • It was something else I tell you. I hope that you never have any more again in your neck of the woods either. They are so powerful and can be so destructive. Mahalo for your thoughts my friend.

  45. Hey! Where’s my comment?! I should have been near the top and left you word that I loved you and an order to stay safe. I am glad you listened ven if you didn’t get the comment.

    • ven? LOL Gotcha! LOL Your getting like me. Q it’s comment 24. My blog can only handle so many comments on one page. Click the older comments link below. Thanks again :)
