Tales on Tuesday – Speed Racer

Nessa at The Chrysalis Stage hosts Tales on Tuesday. Thanks Nessa for hosting. Direct from Nessa’s blog comes the following:
Tell a short, short (500 words or less) story based on the week’s theme. Each theme will be the title of a TV show to provide some inspiration.
Your story does not have to have anything in common with the TV show.”
You can click the picture above or the link above to get more instructions. This week’s theme is Speed Racer.
Millie’s heart was racing a mile a minute. Here she was the first gil to race in the Moo Goo Gai Pan 500. With thirty other racers entered she knew that she would have to pay attention and fend for herself against the rest of the all-male field.
“Gentleman start your engines” the command came.
Millie cranked her up by hoisting the sail. All of a sudden she thought “How’s that? ‘Gentleman start your engines’. They didn’t even acknowledge that I’m in this race. Well I’ll show them.”
The green flag waved and they were off with a hard push from their starters. They started off slowly but built speed with each passing second. Millie was carefully winding her way through the track avoiding all the rocks and trees that were on the course. It was a very bumpy and the dust was continuing it’s bloom with each rotation of their tires. The wind was in perfect harmony with her vehicle and her sail at full throttle. The crowd was hollering for all the drivers. Each of them hopeful to be the first to take the checkered flag. Millie had done this so many times in practice that she could do it with her eyes closed.
“Gentleman start your engines” echoed in her brain.
She could see the finish line up ahead. Looking over to her right then left she saw three other drivers neck and neck with her. She had to do it. She had to win this. Prove that she could keep up with the boys. Prove that she could build a soap box derby car, capable of winning, with the best of them.
Watching the three other boys get their medals for the win, place and show did not help matters. Millie wouldn’t cry however. Her father told her that he slipped on the push starting her and it was all his fault.
“That’s okay Dad…”
“And now would Millie please come to the podium” the loud speaker called out.
Proudly displaying her medal for being the first girl to successfully build a soap box derby car and compete in the Moo Goo Gai Pan 500 Millie knew she would be back next year. “Gentleman start your engines” would make her a better Speed Racer
Hey, it’s only my opinion.
