Quilly at Quintessentially Quilly hosts a monthly writing assignment called Quilldancing. You can get all the instructions by clicking HERE or by clicking the badge above. For this month we get the following:

“Your Writing Assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to write a complete story in 500 words or less using the scenario below to kick-start your thinking. Publish your story on your blog April 15th, then come back here and link it to my April 15th story.

As we all know, “April showers bring May flowers”. This month’s story should include a sudden rain fall and a recalcitrant umbrella. And, since this is National Poetry Month, your story should include a bit of poetry. You can write it yourself or use somebody else’s (be sure to give credit where credit is due); it can rhyme or not; as you wish. See you on the 15th!”

Bumbershoot

She ran as fast as she could thinking in her mind:

“Rain rain, go away. Please come back some other day”.

Thanks to her brother, her bumbershoot wouldn’t open. And she needed it desperately as it was a prop called for in the casting call. She would get even with him if it’s the last thing she ever did.

Focusing on the task at hand MaTilda had to make a decision. Should she buy a new bumbershoot or when she got to the audition try to fix the one her snotty brother broke? MaTilda was having a hell of a time deciding. The rain kept beating down on her. It was hard to see. She was soaked to the bone. And she couldn’t be late. This was her one big shot. “Hell with it” she thought. “I’ll fix it there”.

Arriving at the set MaTilda looked around and saw all the others waiting to audition. Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Jean Hagen to name a few. She found and empty seat and proceeded to work on the malfunctioning bumbershoot. Try as she might she could not get it to open. Tears began to run down her cheek.

“Damn him.”

“MaTilda vonHusen” she heard being called out over the loud speaker.

Going up to the stage, MaTilda was asked to open her umbrella and take her place on the set. She couldn’t. She knew it.

“Debbie Reynolds” the loud speaker called out.

And that is how MaTilda vonaHusen lost her break out part in “Singing In The Rain”.
