small-word-Saturday

Caravan Trading Group at Egypt Everlasting hosts Small World Saturday. I would like to thank them for doing such a great job. The purpose is to take the theme and tell about it some way in your part of the world. You can click on the picture or the link for more detailed instructions.

SWEETS

When I saw this weeks theme I thought crap. I’m not big into Sweets at all. Sweets could mean a whole bunch of things, but I decided to take it the candy route. Even though I do not eat candy all that often it represents Sweets to me a great deal. I think it does to everyone as a matter of fact. So then I started thinking about candy. Yes Hawai’i does have the typical candy that you can get in almost any store, but we also have candy that is local. It might be a dried mango, plum or gummy bear, but there is this company, Enjoy Snacks, that adds Li Hing to it. From e-hawaii.com it says: “Li Hing is sometimes referred to as the “Hawaiian Spice”, it originated from mainland China and is a salty/sweet spice used to flavor Chinese dried fruits and seeds, and more contemporarily in desserts.” From Babylon it says: “Li hing mui is salty dried plum. It can be found in Hawaiian and Asian markets. It has a strong, distinctive taste, and is often said to be an acquired taste. Li Hing Mui originated from mainland China as a dried plum version of a preserved “ume”. The name “Li Hing Mui” was originated by Yick Lung Company which introduced the plum to Hawaii in the early 1900s.” Believe me, it is an acquired taste. I don’t care for it at all. But many people do. You can buy the powder by itself and add it to anything you want. People put this powder in Lemons, Oranges, Limes, just about anything they want and eat the fruit. There are plenty of dried fruits and gummy candies that Enjoy Snacks add this too and sell it. I have put some photos below with just a sample of the candies they sell.

In addition to the above, Hawai’i is know for it’s Macadamia nuts. When I first moved over here I worked for the company that owned Mauna Loa Macadamia Nuts (just thought I would throw that in). Manua Loa, Hawiian Host and Hawaiian Sun are the big companies that people usually buy their mac nuts from in the stores. Chocolate covered mac nuts, Maui Caramacs, and Kona Krunch are just a few of the different types you can purchase. They are great, but I like the mac nuts just plain myself.

I hope you enjoy the pictures below. :)

Have a Sweet Small World Saturday!

Hey, it’s only my opinion.

  1. Sweet! I enjoyed this; I didn’t know a lot of that.

There’s only one place I’ve been able to find macadamia nuts in Ireland: in a Subway cookie. Is that dumb or what? People here just don’t know what’s good.

  2. I don’t care for Li Hing, either, but macadamia nuts and chocolate are my favorite.

  3. I pretty much only eat candy with chocolate. Maybe an occasional lemon drop.

  4. Thanks a million.
    Now I’m graving sweets….sigh…

  5. As a matter of fact, I heard about the Macadamia nuts for the first time yesterday!! They were mentioned in a cooking program, and when I heard Hawaii, my ears popped! LOL!

  6. I love Macadamia nuts but I am alleric to the (just headaches) but if I could eatht ehchocolate ones….. yummy! You sure ended up finding lots of sweets, sweetsxoxoxoxo

  7. Thom, when I was a kid and lived in Japan all the “cool” kids ate Li Huing Mui because they got it sent from friends in Hawaii. So when I went to Hawaii on the way back to the states I bought some (with my OWN money) at Alamoana Mall. It was FOUL, but I convinced myself that the kids at my new school in the US would think I was SO COOL because I ate this dried up salty-sweet plum. Guess what. They didn’t. I still wasn’t cool. Oh well…at least I had my snack for each day.
