Last Saturday as you know Quilly, Charley and I went on our Duck Tour. The highlight was going in the Bowfin Submarine. When you go there, you get a head set and can do the tour at your own pace. It’s great. Inside I was amazed at how cramped it was and how much is inside. The crew sleeps in shifts, called hot bunking as there is not enough beds to have them have there own. They sleep over the torpedos and just anywhere they bunks are. The port holes are so small that I can’t imagine when there is an emergency someone not banging their head. Being tall in a submarine is a real disadvantage. One thing I was shocked about is the engines are made by General Electric. It also produces 64,000 Horse Power. They of course have a small galley and the kitchen the cooks cook round the clock. It was an amazing tour and I really enjoyed it. You will see photos of the entire submarine below. I hope you enjoy.
Have a very happy Scenic Sunday everyone!
Hey, it’s only my opinion.
A Hui Hou

You had quite a day!
And yes, my Hubs can attest to sleeping over the torpedo. Good he can sleep anywhere.
Thank you. I sure wouldn’t be able to sleep over them though. I posted this because James left a comment he wanted to see more of the Bowfin. And then he goes off on vacation LOL. Oh well
It’ll still be here when he gets back
Looks like an interesting visit. We have a Maritime Museum and there is a ship that you can go into. At times the areas seemed very tight. It was really interesting to see all the old stuff on the ship too.
How cool. It is interesting to see things such as that. We don’t get to very often so it’s always amazing what’s in there and on them
I agree that being tall in a submarine is a disadvantage. I was perfectly ok with my height when I was inside a submarine lol! These are all very interesting photos of an interesting tour. I love the look of calm and peace in the water.
Glad you enjoyed this. It’s just fantastic to see the inside. How those men did it is beyond me. I suppose now to be correct I should say men and women. My hats off to anyone that serves on a submarine
Great shots.
Thank you my friend
Gee Thom, some of these photos look really familiar! Come to think of it, so do some of the people!
Isn’t that the truth. I posted these for this because James wanted to see more of the Bowfin
So I obliged. Funny how I miss those people for some strange reason.
I’ve been reading “No Ordinary Time” by Doris Kearns Goodwin; it’s all about Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt from 1940-1945. Many companies produced parts for the war effort (esp. auto companies), so I’m not surprised to see the General Electric name!
I remember touring the USS Arizona way back in 1986, but I can’t recall if I went on the Bowfin, too.
How cool. I had no idea and was amazed by that. It is so interesting. 86 is the year I moved here
I miss Hawaii. I am glad I get to visit my old home through your blog.
Mahalo!
How cool…And I’m glad you feel that way
Cool tour and photos of the submarine. Looks like you all had a fun time together!
Indeed we did and I’m glad you enjoyed
That was interesting – like going on a trip with you and learning all about torpedoes and such!
…White Mountains!
Thank you. It was real fun and a great learning experience
Hi Thom, you really got some great shots. I was in the navy but I wasn’t on a sub, I was on a hospital ship. You might have seen what it looks like on the news recently. The USNS Comfort was sent to Haiti and the Comfort looks exactly like my old ship The Mercy.
Just the other day I was thinking how bad it must have been for someone who had to hot bunk with a sick bunk mate.
Gotta go enjoy the sun before te rain starts, see you around.
Thanks for sharing this info. Yes I watched the USNS Comfort leave. It was a relief to see it set sail. And it’s huge. I’m glad you enjoyed and enjoy your sun
LOL! I’m so glad I bigged some of these pictures! Especially the FIRST one – because even after having READ your post, I still looked at that first photo and saw “OH! A big flower!” LOL! Until I bigged it! ROFLMBO! I get so excited about cute, funny, serendipitous statues when I’m out and about… and I just thought you’d found one! LOL! But wow! What a great time you guys had! I LOVED taking the Duck Tour in DC last summer! They are so much fun! You would never in a million years get me DOWN IN that submarine though! I’d have fun looking around on the top — but inside? NOPE! Not gonna do it! Glad you took pictures for me!
ROFLMAO!!! A flower…Oh my darlin’ that is just too funny. Yeah it was one of the best tours I’ve ever been on. I’m so glad you enjoyed the pictures
And I’m glad you biggied them LOL
wow, impressive stuff! just too many photos to click them all (a slideshow would be great)
Damn it…why didn’t I think to do a slide show. Shucks. Next time I am when I have so many pictures. Thanks for reminding me of that
Wow, awesome pictures! The only submarine I have been on is the one at Disneyland lol
LOL…before this one it was the only one I had ever been on as well
LOL
So cool! I would love to tour that! Only submarine I ever went in was the Atlantis one. LOL!
It’s wonderful but the only one I was one before this was at Disneyland LOL
I don’t think I could sleep over torpedoes!
Ditto my friend. Ditto
