Devon’s Rattle
Three Word Thursday #9
It is that time of the week. One I look forward to a great deal. And by the way Quilly, mahalo for hosting Three Word Thursday. It’s a blast and I can’t tell you how much I enjoy it.
Each week Quilly, Quilly’s Pacific…Paradise? gives us three words to compose a story. This weeks words are:
jussulent – Full of broth or soup
tenebrous – dark; gloomy; obscure.
ebullient – a. overflowing with fervor, enthusiasm, or excitement; high-spirited: The award winner was in an ebullient mood at the dinner in her honor. b – bubbling up like a boiling liquid.
Devon’s Rattle
Ebullient was the only way to describe Howie. The sleek bloodhound took huge strides, always had a grin on his face and was always in a good mood. And like The Lightning Bug he just never seemed to shut up. He couldn’t keep his mouth shut for the life of him. It was usually jibberish that the volgivagant would enjoy because nobody ever talks to them. But today, The Lightning Bug was right up on the top of the hounds nose and the two of them were going two forty. Devon’s ears hurt. Simultaneously wondering what Samantha had to show them he looked over at Gracie he smiled with great joy. Oh how he loved that girl.
Making his way through the weald, Howie finally came to a halt in front of a jussulent pond. Devon peered down from the towering Bloodhound towards the noise. Much to his surprise, Gracie, Samantha and The Ligthning Bug were already down on the ground and heading directly to the noisemaker.
“Devon you must get down now. I can’t take you any further but I shall wait here for you all” Howie commanded.
“But that snake will eat us Howie” Devon worriedly replied.
Letting out a huge laugh Howie said “That’s just Randy The Rattler. He’s the most friendly guy around. He keeps that rattler going when he knows Samantha is on her way to visit him. They have been friends for such a long time and whenever she has a gift to give, he stands guard for her so no one will steal it. He is anything but tenebrous to her.”
Devon hesitantly jumped off and landed over by the group and Randy.
“…so kind of you Randy, as usual for standing guard” he heard Samantha talking. “Oh and this is Devon. Devon this is my friend Randy.”
“Ppppllleeeaassseeeddd” Randy stuttered. Aaa fffrrriiieeennnddd ooofff Sssaaammm’sss iiisss aaa fffrrriiieeennnddd ooofff mmmiiinnneee.”
“Thanks bud” Devon replied. He was looking at the scaley snake, his brown and grey coloring in a crisscross pattern. And the rattle’s now looking like a tamborine, still and calm, all in place after making their music from the snakes tail. Atop him was a critter. Devon thought he knew exactly where this critter came from: Random ramblings from the sunny side of the Alps. The minuscule knight in a shiny chitinous armour made is way slowly off Randy and down to the ground to continue his hunt for food.
“Come on I want to present my gift” Samantha instructed. “See ya Randy and thanks.”
“Mmmooosssttt wwweeelllcccooommmeee” he replied and slithered off throught the grass.
Making their way through a small entry way of rocks, towards the edge of the pond, Devon looked over and saw in total awe….
She took her aim well and began her dive. Knowing that the kids were starving by this time, she had to succeed. She will be victorious.
Oh, the life of the children.

well, this is another great episode. and thank you for the shout out
i’m a little preplexed by your definition of tenebrous, though. my reference says it means dark and gloomy so i have no idea where you got yours…
Direct from Quilly’s website. And you are welcome. After I walk the dog I’m going to go check but I clicked on the words on her site and that’s what I got.
Well I went back and checked and I obviously made a mistake. Thanks for bringing it up. I have corrected it. Thanks a lot
Another cliffhanger. You and Dr. John take great joy in these, don’t you? Frustration. Now I have to wait until next Thursday!
Keeps you on your toes
I love how they all have their own characters! I lllllllllllloooooooooovve the rattlesnake!!
Thanks so much. I sorta liked him too. I’m glad you picked up on that they all have their own character…that’s why I made him lisp…it just sorta reminded me of a snake
Bugs and chickens and dogs. You are making a dragon hungry. Enjoyed the story.
Thank you. Don’t mean to make ya hungry. LOL
Your stories make me think of Aesop’s Fables.
If only they were that good LOL Thanks for stopping by
That was a cute little adventure. I also liked the snake. The way that you typed his speech impediment reminded me of a rattlesnake’s tail when it’s on “full alert.”
You know that’s what I was thinking while writing it
Ah! I do believe Randy is a dandy! I LIKE that snake! (and I don’t LIKE snakes!) This chapter in the life of Devon left ME with an ebullient smile!
Your a poet and don’t know it LOL. Thanks Melli. I appreciate it.
Another wonderful chapter in Devon’s story!
I love the cliffhangers – keeps me coming back.
I’d come back anyway!
Mahalo Carletta. I’m glad you keep coming back and that you like the cliffhangers
Reba will be delighted to find that you have now included a dog in your story. She’s sleeping now. Great story, Randy sounds like a nice guy. The ending is scary, can’t wait to find out what happens next week.
Well I’m glad that Reba is happy. She had mentioned it a couple of weeks ago so I had to make sure to get a dog in there. I don’t wanna give anything away about next weeks story except to say…tune in
Thanks for your commnets Alice
