AT&T Rant
Well I haven’t done a good rant for a while but I’m going to today and it’s pretty long. No quiz either by the way. Now I will admit right up front I’m not the most eloquent speaker, I’m very rough around the edges and I tend to talk before I think. Point here is that yes I told AT&T not to have their manager contact me and they didn’t so this could be my fault but what you are about to read just so pisses me off about AT&T and what crappy customer service they have that I can’t see straight. It’s all about the almighty dollar I tell you. So sit back and enjoy the ride.
One of the blogs I follow is TiPb (The iPhone Blog). It’s a great blog. Well this morning, and this isn’t the first time they have posted about this, the do a post about AT&T Eligiblity Dates Indicating Early June iPhone G4 Release?. In other words it’s about the eligibility for you to upgrade your current phone on AT&T in anticipation of the release of the new Apple iPhone 4G that is expected to be released some time this month. So I follow the instructions and what do I get? Read on.

This floored me. Why you might ask? Well striking out information that is personal to me you will read the following that I started with AT&T the end of May. You see, I called them and then followed up with emails about this very subject wanting my eligibility date to change from August 19, 2010 to some time June so that I would be able to get the new iPhone at the upgrade price. All I was told was no dice. They can’t do it because of the contract they have with Apple, Inc.. I share the following with you:

A2:I’m disgusted with your company. I would like my early renewal
changed from August to June so I can get the new iPhone. No one in
customer service says that they can change that which is absurd. I
was told my early cancellation fee will be XXX, XXX, and XXX on each
phone and believe me I’m leaving if this doesn’t get changed. It’s
ridiculous for two months to have to go through this. Your customer
service stinks!!!

Dear Thom Robinson,
Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T regarding XXX-XXX-XXXX.
My name is Betty Otto, and I am happy to help you with your
inquiry. I can understand you being concerned about your early
renewal date not being available until August 19, 2010.
After reviewing your account, I found your request has been
forwarded to a manager. You will hear from the manager within 72
hours. Because of the strict contract and policy AT&T and Apple
have with each other, we are unable to change your renewal date for
the iPhone. Understanding this policy is not advantageous to our
customers we do need to remain compliant with Apple and their
contract. We can override your eligibility date on any other phone
as long as you contact us at 1-800-331-0500, this override cannot be

You have just lost a customer. Don’t give me that this is compliance with Apple. You just don’t want to pay the subsidy for my phone. I will be cancelling and moving all three of my numbers and WILL NOT EVER recommend ATT to anyone.

And one more thing. I will not be renewing my ipad data plan. So you will loose around $160 a month from me. Small potatoes in the grand scheme of thing but your loss. I’m going to write apple and let them know about this. All for something so trivial. How sad your company is.

Dear Thom Robinson,
Thank you for contacting AT&T my name is Bonnie Losh and I will be happy to assist you today. I understand you are upset because you are not able to upgrade earlier than August.
As explained earlier a manager will be contacting you regarding your account. I do apoligize but our agreement with Apple states that we can not upgrade early to another iphone unless you pay the early upgrade price. The contract between AT&T and Apple states that we can not offer early upgrades without charging the prices laid out in the contract by Apple. We can do an early upgrade on any other phone but the Iphone.
I do understand that this is frustrating but we have to abide by the rules of the contract.
We at AT&T appreciate your business and value you as a customer.

And as i say you have lost a customer. Why would Apple give a crap about this. If ATT pays the difference who cares. This is just all because your company is to cheap to do this and try and nickle and dime everyone to death. So you can tell your manager to forget contacting me. I’m gone!! And I intended to let everyone I know and will blog this ludicrous rule your company has.

So this is where it stood after the 27th of May. I was waiting to see the new HTC on Sprint, EVO. It’s a new phone on a 4G network. It got released June 4th. Well they are out of stock and I couldn’t buy one and transfer everything but I saw it and it’s a great phone and fast. Back to this text message I got. I started wondering today why all of a sudden. Was it the new EVO? Did AT&T do this to keep me as a customer? So I called AT&T today inquiring why my eligibility date had been moved up after it was denied only a week before? Strange isn’t it? The answer I get from Rebecca at AT&T, who did the research said that my payment was made on the account and since my primary phone is the iPhone that it became eligible for the upgrade. Can you believe all of this? I was just dumbfounded with this. Never had my monthly payment been brought into this, which by the way, AT&T has automatic withdraw from my checking account, so it is never late. I couldn’t believe this.
So my point to all this is how crappy AT&T really is. They change things willy nilly to suit their own needs and the customer be damned. You can’t get a straight answer from them ever. I still stick by my first assessment that their Customer Service stinks and this was all done because AT&T knows that the new iPhone is going to be released some time this month and they are going out of their way to keep their customers and entice them to upgrade.
Thanks for bearing with me on this. What have a I decided to do? Don’t quite know yet. The EVO is sold out here in Honolulu and I really like the iPhone. But AT&T? BITE ME!!!
Hey, it’s only my opinion.

Well, I bet you aren’t the only one they’re dealing with over this issue — those replies do have a whiff of form-letter about them.
This is exactly why I’ve been hesitating so far over switching to Macs and the iPhone now that we’re in America: I just don’t like the way Apple works. They come across as very much “My Way or the Highway”, take it or leave it, in everything from price to availability to whatever. To be honest they remind me too much of the Borg: we-will-assim-ilate-you-res-istance-is-fut-ile…
So I’ve been looking at the Droid phone instead, but their ads don’t convey a lot beyond “look how cool this is” (okay, but what does it DO?) and then there’s Blackberries, meh. So I don’t know. I like all the apps iPhone offers, but, well, I don’t like being forced to go AT&T if I choose iPhone, and then they KNOW I can’t switch providers if I’m unhappy with service, without ditching my whole phone. And a two-year contract, in this fast-moving digital age? Puh.
I have to admit I enjoyed reading your rant (though I’m sorry you’re going through something this annoying) because I’m enduring the same thing these days with UnbeatableSale.com. It’s hard to stay polite and professional in emails when you’re mad as h*ll!!!
:-X
oh! i know someone who hacked an iPhone so he could use it with tMobile!
Indeed you can Tilden. It’s a very easy process to do
Mine was jailbroken for a long time. Then the apps started getting better and there was no need for it any longer
Susan: First of all you missed the point. This has NOTHING to do with Apple. It’s all about AT&T. Yes the iPhone is an Apple product, and yes they do make you go to AT&T but that’s not what I’m complaining about here. It’s all what AT&T has done and this is just the tip of the iceberg. They have raised their termination fees and changed all the data plans. But I do think that this is going to be the way of the future.
Get use to 2 year contracts over here. It’s about the only way you can get a phone at a cheap price. The Android phones are just a different Operating system. Same smell as the OS with the iPhone. They all have their apps. They all have their ups and downs as far as what does what. I’m hot on that EVO right now. It’s really comparable to the iPhone and that 4G network is faster than a speeding bullet.
And just a little FYI the iPhone doesn’t have to stay on AT&T. It is very easy to jailbreak it and take it to a carrier of your choice. That has it’s ups and downs as it voids the warranty with Apple.
As you know I love my iPhone. I couldn’t live without it. But the smartphones have taken such a huge step forward that any of them really now days do anything. It’s just a matter of what bullshit you are willing to put up with as far as customer service is concerned. And this just was enough to make me do this post
Thom, I totally understand how unhappy you are with *AT&T*, it’s pretty clear in your post! I only meant to say how *your* AT&T experience reinforces how *I* feel about *Apple*, especially in taking their customer’s choices away and forcing AT&T on them.
I mean, of course your AT&T customer service is crap — how much incentive do they have to make you happy? NONE, when they know that they’re the only choice you have, to comply with Apple. That just pisses me off no end.
When we lived in Maryland years ago, we started out with AT&T regular phone service, and good grief, they were ten times the price of everyone else. I’d never choose them. But if I had to spend hundreds on an iPhone, I wouldn’t want to void my warranty either. So yeah, I’m looking at the other phones too! (also buying lottery tickets to afford them LOL)
I got you sister. I should have known better LOL. Well we will talk about it next week
Deal?
LOL! Ohhhhhhh my! Well, I ALWAYS hated AT&T service! We got out of them the very minute Verizon became available to us and have never looked back! But Krysti just asked me a couple of days ago if I would get her an iPad for her birthday and I said NO! A.) We do not customarily give gifts THAT expensive for birthdays. (we have given each of the kids a one time deal of a laptop — now she thinks she should get something like that EVERY time! NOT!) B.) I hate Apple! I have never had anything but headaches every time I go into one of their stores because one of my kids HAS to HAVE one of their products! Their service techs are rude and I refuse to do business with them! Apple thinks they have the market locked up and they can do anything they want and get away with it! NOT in MY book! Every single product they make is a luxury item – NOTHING they have is ANYTHING I can’t live without!
Melli, I had to laugh when you mentioned the service techs — the last time I took my daughter to look at Macs, I wanted to just slap the arrogant salesboy by the end of it. UGH!
My darlin’ – LOL…Well as you know I just moved to Apple. I guess I’m as snotty as those turds are at the Apple store. They don’t bother me. You snotty with me I’ll be right back at you in your face LOL But what computer technician isn’t snotty. They think they know it all and you call in with a problem and they make you think it’s all your fault. It’s just not Apple, believe me. I was Windows for close to 20 years and have seen it all actually. I’m glad I made the move. This iMac is the bomb and I haven’t had one problem with it yet. Granted it’s still new but what I’ve seen so far I’m ashamed to say I wasn’t a mac user all along. As for the iPad…I LOVE mine. I use it more than my iPhone now. It does everything. Well worth the money. I hope Krysti gets one. Have her save the money. Well worth it. But my darlin’ there are going to be plenty of Tablets coming out. Not all Apple based. The anroid system is getting plenty, HP is suppose to come out with the Slate that is suppose to be top notch. Dell is releasing the Streak I believe late this month or early next month. Plenty to choose from
see if you can get a evo on the way to the party?
you could see if they are available over here and pick one up then?
I’m waiting to see when the iPhone is going to be released. And i’ve thought of that. Maybe in Seattle they will have it available. I call Sprint everyday…we shall see
i simply admire your patience..
cool post!
Thank you my friend.
Sometimes it wears real thin
Customer service does seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur for the most part.
Serious bummer that you’re having these frustrations. I’ve had at&t service for several years now and have had really good experiences up to this point.
I just upgraded my iphone about two months ago. Guess I’m in for a long wait for the 4G model.
Well I’ve been with them for years and years. But this has been just crappy my friend.
It’s really not as frustrating as it is annoying that I got the run around and I’m sure I’m not the only one that did. And if I want the new iPhone bad enough, I’ll just pay full price. That’s how I am. I’m just waiting to hear tomorrow whats up at the conference when all the information is going to be released about what Apple is going to do and when
I can’t wait
AT&T has a closed market. Apple only sanctions them. That means AT&T can treat you however they wish and not worry about how you feel about it. You want the phone. You’ll put up with their crap.
As Melli said, it is all luxuries. None of us need them. I won’t put up with their crap. In September I am switching to Verison.
Or how about Verizon LOL AT&T was in existence long long long before Apple ever came around so they are anything but sanctioned by Apple. It doesn’t really matter what cell phone company you go to. They are all the same and no one will convince me otherwise. You play by their rules are get the hell out. Plain and simple. If Verizon did this, or Sprint did this to me just the title of the post would be different. Same smell
Thom — they are sanctioned by Apple. If you want an iPhone and a warranty you HAVE to use AT&T. Period. Apple & AT&T are trying to sew that little corner up as their own kingdom.
You are sooo wrong. They aren’t sanctioned by Apple at all. They are their own company that was chosen by Apple to handle the iPhone. It’s been like that since apple chose them to be the exclusive carrier for the iphone but that is soon to change. Verizon is soon to be rumored to carry the iPhone. It has to work however on their cdma or cma whatever the hell it’s called network. Sprint is also rumored to get the iPhone soon. And if it were what you say Blackberry (RIM) sure as hell wouldn’t stay around. They are a HUGE competitor of all other brands and makes if phone.
Okay I think somebody special that we all love, needs to look up “sanctioned”.
LOL
BITE ME!!! Ooops well maybe a tad they are but don’t tell Q I said so LOL
sanctioned: action by one or more states [entities] toward another state [entity] calculated to force it to comply with legal obligations.
Apple forced iPhone users to do business with AT&T. That is a sanction.
And then the users learned to jailbreak and the sanction be damned.
I am so out of this I really don’t have anything intelligent to say. I have a cell phone that I use primarily for emergencies and to talk to my kids — that’s it. I love my computer, love being able to blog but don’t give a s–t about anything else. So, now that I’ve added my brilliant thoughts, I’ll go to bed! Love you all!
Sylvia
And what brilliant thoughts they were.
You sound just like my mom LOL
Get a good nights rest
I’ll let you in on a secret…I wouldn’t cross the street to get any A T&T product…if they were giving them away. The company literally tries to suck blood from a turnip. I spent 3 years in court suing the company. I won. But it wasn’t about the money…I didn’t get money except for what they owed me….it was about their principals and shenanigans on, as you say, customer service.
Hope Sprint will work out for you. I’ve not heard anything negative about that service.
Oh, and no, I’m not in a slump other than Mr. G left me a comment asking me if I was sick or on vacation or mad at him since I haven’t participated in Flash Fiction for a couple of weeks…that’s all. I do appreciate your fine comment and concern for me…you rock.
Well I’m glad for you and congratulations!!! I’m still debating Sprint. I just watched the WWDC keynote, well listened to it and I so love the iPhone I’m most likely going to stick with them. AT&T be damned. Customer service takes such a back seat to everything now days. Now that I read your comment you are right it was about the 55. And that’s what I meant.
You rock as well
Ugh. These kind of services can really get on the nerves. It always annoys me, when companies seem to take off their responsibility as soon as the product goes purchased. Not reliable at all. I hope you’ll find a way better product. Don’t let them spoil your mood on the beginning of week. xoxoxo
Nawh they don’t ruin my attitude. I just hadn’t done a good rant for a while and decided it was time. LOL It just so makes me mad about customer service now days. When will the customer get the service they so richly deserve
I am glad you got all of that out but to be honest, i skipped over it all. I don’t love my phones as much as you do.
WHAT???? You didn’t read my words of wisdom? LOL I hear ya
I love e-readers and computers and netbooks and laptops and internet cards, digital cameras…
i love gadgets
i love it all!
but and this is a big but!
i hate phones!
i absolutely hate when someone calls my phone
a mobile or a landline
friggin hate phone calls
hate them!
i only want to talk on the phone if i initiate the call to my FRIEND!or if my FRIEND calls me!
colleen has an iTouch – and it seems like the iPad and the iTouch are right up my alley! they do EVERYTHING BUT MAKE PHONE CALLS!
yeee-haa!
LOL….what is so funny is that I rarely use my phone for phone calls LOL It’s for everything else actually
I’m so with you on all of this stuff.
Customer Service can suck! Whenever my brother has a problem they seem unable or unwilling (more likely) to solve he just says “put me through to cancellations” – it does the trick every time!
Funny thing…I use the same tactic as your brother LOL
It does seem to work
But this time not so much until Apple stepped in and made it possible to upgrade for more people. AT&T agreed
“Understanding this policy is not advantageous to our
customers we do need to remain compliant with Apple and their
contract. ” ?!!
I wrote AT&T off years ago simply because they are always over priced. Then, back when I was still willing to use Qwest local service, I had a great long distance when suddenly AT&T slammed me! Out of the blue my old service disappeared and to get them back Qwest demanded a fee! Well, you see where this is going.
Indeed I do…the same old thing over and over again. It is a never ending battle with all of this and it sucks big time
I’m just glad it isn’t the bad old days when the only option was Ma Bell or nothing.
I so agree
well thom, that is quite the rant…. i think just a tiny little part of you is enjoying the HELL out of this. i feel like some of the others who just dont give a flying fig about any of it. i have my cell phone because i have no landline and i dont care about anything as long as i can get the occasional phone call from somebody i love, like you… i can do without all the political calls too. they are driving me crazy and that wont stop til november… give me strength !!!! but you go get ‘um i say…. hope you get what you want in the end.
A little bit? Ma I’m enjoying this more than a lot of things right at the moment. And after listening to the keynote this morning from Apple they are the ones responsible for getting the upgrades earlier. They want to sell their product. That being said, I haven’t given up on the EVO. I still want to check it out. But I like what I hear about iPhone 4. Love ya and see ya Friday
Hey! I personally love Apple products, and have never had any issues with them- they’ve quickly resolved anything I had. I also have Verizon, and although they annoy me from time to time, I won’t switch because for where I am, and where I go they have hands down the best coverage and I am willing to pay their higher prices to not have to think about whether or not I have a signal. That would annoy me. There is very scketchy sprint coverage in the building I work in. my boss keeps telling me to switch to sprint, and he’s paying 10% less than me (he’s not but maybe 6%) BUT he goes outside everytime he needs to use his phone! SERIOUSLY? I don’t think so – then I pointed out that if he’s in the building 48 hours a week and there’s 168 hours in a week then he’s really overpaying because he’s getting more than 25% less coverage than me! ATT has a giant hole in it’s coverage where I spend a lot of my down time – and there are dark narrow lanes not roads through woods, so I want my cell phone to work. Tmobile doesn’t work well where I live.
THat being said, from what I got unofficially from a regional sales mgr from apple a big part of apples problem with verizon is verizon “locks” down parts of phones. Like when I had the razor ( whenthat was new) if you had it from another carrier you could put stuff in it, that wouldn’t work with verizon. ( not a real tech nerd here so I really didn’t pay that close attention and I don’t know how to explain it) Apple won’t let the carrier restrict the capabilities of the phone.
I just got the droid incredible. Love it. have the wifi i pad – love it – and in NJ at least wi fi is plentiful.
I so hear ya about your Manager. I think you have just convinced me not to go to Sprint that’s for sure. How do you like the incredible? I’ve heard it’s the bomb!!! But they just talked this morning at WWDC about the iPhone 4 and I’ve decided to just stay with ATT and get the new iPhone. That way I will have my iPad, iMac and iPhone all linked up. BTW I love Apple products. They are the bomb and I’m only sad I didn’t switch to apple a long long time ago. Despite this one issue I’ve had with them I rarely contact AT&T for anything. I put up with the dropped calls. But I text more than anything and use my iPhone for more of the data stuff. And I like it a great deal. So I think I’m staying
all this is just too alien for me to comment on (yeah, we have monopolists too)
LOL..I’m sure you do
u tickle me such much,
I truly appreciate your encouragement!
Happy Tuesday ahead!
Thank you my friend
Smiles!

U Rock!
We’ve had Verizon Wireless for many years now, and we’ve always been very satisfied with their coverage. Their website for customer interface leaves much to be desired, but their in-store and phone service has always been very good. Just a tip: hubby loves his Android.
Oh, and the guy at Verizon told us yesterday that many, many of their customers have come in with their iPads to buy the Verizon MyFi.
Thanks for the info. I’m gonna have to check that out.
. I’ve been with ATT so long I don’t know any better. LOL. I’ve heard that the Incredible is awesome.
I do not have all this problem as I am still using Malaysia’s Provider.
Hubby has all signed up with AT&T and he is thinking of going Apple since he has the iphone…Oh dear…
Well, since I am not paying…LOL
hugs
shakira
LOL. true if he pays the bills nothing for you to have to worry about.
Wow, you started quite a conversation here, I’d say you touched a nerve with this post.
I too have had horrible customer service issues with ATT and they never seem to care at all. They lie and manipulate and it seems there is nothing we can do about it.
Furthermore, I would LOVE, LOVE to see someone slap one of those arrogant Apple boys. . . will Susan please come to San Francisco and do that for me? Please.
ROFLMAO Can you wait a year? I think she plans on going there next year. LOL. I don’t think it is just ATT either here it is customer service all around. We the consumers suffer. Maybe if more people started blogging and telling what’s going on companies would wake up and things might change.
Yes, Sprint is supposed to get the iPhone, but I think you would love the EVO. I work for Sprint. If you make the move over to Sprint and you become unhappy at some point, just let me know. I’ll take care of ya! At Sprint, we love our customers!
Oh wow Vicki in didn’t know that. Hmmm this puts a whole new light on the subject. I’m glad to know Sprint loves their customers. If you don’t mind me asking what do you do for Sprint? Thanks for sharing.
Wow.
I hope I never get you upset =)
LOL. you won’t I’m sure. You aren’t a money grubbing company. LOL I like you.
All I can say is wow. AT&T sucks! That’s why we switched to Verizon. Crappy phones are a fair trade for the good service we get
Well they are more expensive I’ve also heard but I’ve also heard their network is awesome.
they have the incredible now and I hear it’s the bomb.
Wow, we share a brain (how frightening that sentence is, in retrospect)!
I would have made the exact same demands and replies. Only difference is that with Bell Mobility (here in Canada) I know I’m going to get some satisfaction. When I went to “look” at a smart phone a few weeks ago, the young girl in the store actually started the switchover process without asking me, and deactivated my current phone (losing all of my voice mail, some of which was REALLY important to my business) and did not even tell me – I had to find out the hard way trying to make a phone call 10 mins after I left the store! I was LIVID, and called Bell to rant about it – and was *totally* taken care of.
Better price, better/bigger data package, etc etc etc. I only had to go and choose a new phone, and of course you know I chose the iPhone. I have no idea when the 4G will be released here, but I’m not unhappy with the 3G I got – it’s very sleek and pretty, and makes me happy!
Very happy to say that Bell has excellent customer service. Other services in Canada (like Rogers) are more like AT&T tho – I’ll never deal with Rogers again. Ever. For any reason.
I would have been livid as well. What a dumb thing for that girl to do. I’m glad though that they took care of you. That’s the important thing here. I’m also glad you are loving the iPhone. It’s an awesome phone and won’t be sorry. I do hope you can upgrade. That new phone is the bomb at least from the conference yesterday it looks like it is.
lol…customer service rocks!!!!
LOL…sometimes!!!
In slight defense of AT&T. We had them for years and years because they were the only company that truly supported military troops stationed overseas. As in they were the only ones that DOD had contracts with to provide service. When we first went into Iraq, only AT&T phone cards allowed soldiers to call home.
Same reason we were with American Express for years and why we’re still with USAA.
Back in the days when many Americans treated us military families like dirt, those three companies provided a service we couldn’t get anywhere else.
So…the reason we’re no longer with AT&T and Amex is because now that we’re civilians, we don’t need them anymore, so we’ve gone with the service that is less expensive…Verizon FiOS and MasterCard.
But I appreciate that when nobody wanted us as customers, they took a risk (and it was a risk when military members were constantly on the move and there was no internet banking!)…
Wow I never knew all of that. I’m glad you shared the information with me. I can imagine what a benefit they were to you. That’s good to know. Thanks for sharing this information my friend. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Verizon
http://bit.ly/iphone-no-upgrade
a current iPhone customer has to make the same commitment and bear the same cost that a newbie to AT&T and the iPhone needs to make.
Point well made. I never thought of that. It’s a never ending battle
